Been thinking about Lars TCF Holdhus’ “Self-Hosted Future” as statement, call-to-action and metaphor, and how that applies to my own shambolic (hi, Arden) practise.
With the personal determination that social media has entered the decadent days of the current cycle comes the determination that it must be either walked away from or misused. Lars pointed up something called sandstorm.io - Sandstorm “makes it easy to run your own server.” And, like withknown.com, has a managed-hosting solution for those of us who don’t have the time or knowledge to set up our own server. So, sure, not really self-hosted, but it’s nice when people like Sandstorm or Known refuse to remain arcane and difficult. And Lars isn’t dogmatic about that either. All good.
I keep returning to Amber Case’s term “calm technology” - again, as statement, CTA and particularly metaphor. And, perhaps, as a suggestion to calm the relationship with technology. Two or three tools like these can manage any number of other silo’d processes. Everything you need can be done from the homestead instance.
Half-formed thoughts. (In public.)
